François Rude, The Genius of Liberty (c. 1833). Clay, 32.4 x 22.2 x 10.8 cm. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Reproduced from Peter Fusco and H.W. Janson (eds), The Romantics to Rodin: French Nineteenth-Century Sculpture from North American Collections, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1980, 356. This bust by Rude was probably an early model for The Departure of the Volunteers on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris which commemorates the forming of the first volunteer army in 1792.
